Feline Infectious Peritonitis
Feline Infectious Peritonitis or F.I.P is a viral infection in the same family as the coronavirus which affects dogs. There are two types of Coronavirus, one which is easy for the cat's body to shed(causing brief digestive upset), and the F.I.P causing virus. This highly contagious form is passed from cat to cat through the inhalation or ingestion of infected secretions or excretions.
Symptoms usually show up within weeks of exposure although it can take months or years for some cats to become symptomatic. Even then, the cat can often allow this potentially deadly virus to multiply and take hold before any outward symptoms appear and then symptoms can hit with a vengeance. Initial signs include upper respiratory problems which can subside quickly with no other signs until the body begins to fall apart. Unfortunately, the most common time to discover the cat has F.I.P is during blood work-up for feline leukemia, as the two seem to often happen together.
The scary part of F.I.P. is that the virus itself does very little specific damage to the body. It is the body's exaggerated immune response to the virus that destroys the body's tisuues, organs, and blood vessels. This leads to two types of F.I.P.:
Wet(or effusive)F.I.P.-the immune system attacks blood vessels in response to the spreading virus. Fluid leaks out of damages blood vessels and accumulates in the chest or the abdomen, causing breathing difficulties or a distended belly which often is not painful.
Dry F.I.P- inflammation appears all over the body and a wide variety of symptoms are suffered including coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, seizures, renal failure, coordination problems and even blindness.
The traditional veterinary mindset on this disease is that there are no effective treatments aimed at eliminating the virus from the body. reducing the immune response with steroids and chemotherapy drugs might help temporarily with the clinical signs but cannot cure the disease. Drug suppression of the symptoms at times only seems to cause the viral load to spread and the damage to be a greater effect. A vaccine has been available bit it seems to create a great deal of vaccinosis and is one that we highly recommend against especially for isolated, in-door cats. Remember, it takes exposure to a carrier plus a depressed immune system to sicken the cat.
