This condition tends to occur in middle aged to older dogs. Common signs include thirst and urination, increased appetite, heat intolerance, lethargy, a"potbelly", panting, obesity, weakness, thin skin, hair loss, and bruising.
Diagnosis of Cushing's disease can be difficult because laboratory test results may be inconclusive and false-positive test results are common in dogs that have other diseases. There are many types of tests that can be performed to get a definitive diagnosis of Cushing's disease. Your veterinarian may perform more than one test to help confirm or to determine which form of the disease is present.
Cushing's disease should never be made on the basis of laboratory tests alone. The dog needs to be showing symptoms and have a medical history consistent with the diagnosis. Some types of screening tests are the urine cortisol:creatinine ratio, the low dose dexamethasone suppression test, and ultrasound.
Adrenal malfunction is common in animals who are also exhibiting chronic symptoms, especially infected skin conditions and liver dysfunction. Often, it can actually caused by previous cycles of steroid and antibiotic treatments which are commonly used to suppress reactive symptoms associated with previous conditions such as allergies.
Hyperadrenocorticism can be treated with mitotane, a drug that acts on the adrenal glands to decrease the production of cortisol.
Adverse effects of mitotane can include vomiting and loss of appetite, seizures, and mildly low blood sugar. Some very effective natural alternatives are Azmira's Stress & Adrenal Plex which is a therapeutic formula geared toward reestablishing proper adrenal and thyroid functions. It helps replenish vitality, repair tissue and balance hormones. It benefits pets whether they have hypo-(Addison's)or hyper-(Cushing's) activity of the gland. Azmira's ImmunoStim'R can reduce the stress that catabolic waste can place on the glands, improving cellular respiration and nutrient assimilation, which will restore vitality to the adrenals.
